Help me choose

Background

Symantec sells SSL/TLS certificates of multiple brands, acquired over a period of time. Over this period Symantec has also created products or portals that help customers of all sizes manage the certificates that they buy from us.

Our customers are segmented into retail, SMB, enterprises, large enterprises.

Marketing proposed a tool or configurator for prospective customers that can help them decide which of our products are best suited for them.

The tool is also seen as an upselling medium for prospective customers who fall at the cusp of a segment.

How it works?

When a customer lands on the "Help me choose" page, we present them a set of questions to understand their setup. Based on the customer's choices, we present them the product best suited for their setup.

What are you trying to protect?

  • Is it a website?

  • Is it a server?

  • Is it a network?

  • Is it an application?

Marketing helped us put customer setups into 8 broad categories:

There are two outcomes here:

  1. If customer selects Application Development, direct them to Code Signing products

  2. If customer selects anything else, direct them to SSL products

Next step is to assess how complex is the customer's setup. Namely, number of employees, number of office locations, and number of websites or servers.

Then, check what are they securing. Is it high risk data or low risk data.

Some examples of how these decisions affect the customers' product choices are as follows:

  • Too many websites = Wildcard SSL products

  • High data sensitivity = Premium SecureSite brand SSL products

  • Application development setup = Code signing products

  • High organization complexity = Flagship enterprise products

What did I do in this project?

  • Created wireframes to put marketing's thoughts in images

  • Created wireframes to display how each choice progresses to the next question, and then, to the final recommendation.

  • Wrote descriptions of all the products.

  • Wrote all the content in the tool.
